OTML is committed to the development of its most valuable resource: its employees. Since 1982, more than 10,000 OTML employees have undertaken education and training in some form. Programmes include apprenticeships, on-the-job training, high-school, graduate and local and overseas courses. The Star Mountains Training Institute offers both Technical and Managerial courses for OTML and contractor company students. There are four-year apprenticeship courses in areas such as:
TAFE Australia and the Asia Pacific Technical College offer courses through the Star Mountains Training Institute in technical and trades areas which provide qualifications that are recognised internationally. While these are skills that benefit OTML’s operation, they are applicable across many facets of industry, and recipients of this training have found employment in other companies in PNG and internationally. OTML’s training programmes have received strong endorsements through the Papua New Guinea Apprentice of the Year Awards. Apprentice employees from OTML are consistently at the top of the ranking, either as winners or runners-up, in both practical and technical areas. OTML also provides a Graduate Development Scheme, in which promising new university graduates are identified and offered positions in their area of expertise in a programme that features mentoring, further training and career possibilities. They are GDS employees with leadership qualities and expertise needed by OTML in its long-term future are given management training and preparation for stepping into senior roles when the opportunities arise. Personal development and professional affiliation are promoted through course-attendance and coaching, as an integral part of the scheme. |
