The Environmental Regime

Author: Environment Department, OTML

Date: September 2001

In compliance with a request from the State, OTML submitted the Environmental Regime, outlining the focus of future environmental management activities.   Predicated on the State ackowledging that significant environmental degradation had already occurred, and accepting that these impacts would continue as the mine progresses, the Regime was adopted by the State in December 2001 when the PNG Parliament passed the Mining (Ok Tedi Mine Continuation (Ninth Supplemental) Agreement) Act 2001.  The Regime, comprising compliance monitoring under Schedule I and investigative activites under the four Schedule II programs, is underpinned by a set of anthropocentric values.  The Regime was developed to ensure the State receives the level of information and commentary it needs to make informed decisions about the mine as it continues to operate.
