Water Quality Predictions - the Ok Chem Model

Author: Environmental Geochemistry International Pty Ltd

Date: November 2005

To predict the quality of waters in the Ok Tedi and Fly River main channels, Environmental Geochemistry International Pty Ltd developed the OkChem model for use by OTML in assessing potential future impacts associated with mine derived sediments within the river system.  While a companion to the OkARD model, OkChem does not replace OkARD.  Rather, it uses acidity outputs calculated by OkARD to predict chages in river water quality associated with mining, processing and waste management operations by OTML.

Copper Analogue Report

Author: CSIRO (Drs A. Chariton and S. Apte)

Date: October 2005

This literature review focussed on relevant field and experimental responses of biota to copper-enriched and acidic waters.

Copper Speciation Report

Author: CSIRO (Drs N. Rogers S. Apte and J. Stauber) and Wetlands Research and Management P/L (Dr A. Storey)

Date: May 2005

The specific objectives of this study were to: evaluate and report on all previous copeer toxicity work undertaken in the Fly River system; evaluate routine bioassay and copper speciation data collected by OTML since the commencement of the Regime; review relevant recent literature information on copper toxicity to freshwater aquatic organisms; use the findings of OTML's food-web studies to develop an understanding of the potential toxic impacts of copper on Fly River biological communities (including the effect of copper toxicity in primary carbon production); and recommend future studies required to asess the effects of bioavailable copper on Fly River aquatic organisms.
