OTML management this afternoon confirmed that the Stop Work action taken by members of the Ok Tedi Mining and Allied Workers Union had ended following a meeting between employees with Managing Director Alan Breen.
In a memorandum to employees Mr Breen said that striking employees had agreed to an amicable return to work at the start of Day Shift on Saturday, 15th March, 2008.
The stoppage resulted in a loss of production of some 2,500 tonnes (dmt) contained copper metal in concentrates and 200 kg of contained gold however, because of its good stocks position, management expects that the overall impact on customer deliveries will be minimal. …………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Ok Tedi Mining Limited has been awarded a 2 Star rating (out of a possible 5) for its energy management practices.
The accreditation was given by leading greenhouse and sustainability auditing organisation, Australian-based Energetics Pty Ltd, following Ok Tedi’s first energy audit in late 2007.
The audit scope was to undertake a level two audit in accordance with AS/NZS 3598:2000 (Energy Audit) standard and assess energy management practices.
The auditors were pleasantly surprised by the quantity of data that was available at OTML, which was comparable or better than many mines in Australia, says OTML Environment Manager, Jim Veness.
“This enabled the audit team to develop a comprehensive site-wide Energy Map for both electricity and diesel use,” he said.
In their report the auditors recognised processes OTML currently has in place to reduce energy use. The auditors also proposed some key energy opportunities in various areas of OTML’s operation.
“We all can contribute to saving energy and reducing the amount of greenhouse gases by turning off unused electrical appliances including lights, air conditioners and PCs.
“In a village situation, we can even make a difference by decomposing dead leaves instead of burning them,” Mr Veness said.

Around 60,000 people in the Western Province will receive more than K1billion in benefits in the next six years following the signing of a compensation and regional development package at Tabubil last week (Friday June 29).
The signing of a Memorandum of Agreement was conducted at a ceremony marking the end of an eighteen-month process, which reviewed the compensation for people in the mine area and living downstream from the Ok Tedi copper mine. The review was a scheduled mid-term review of compensation agreements, the Community Mine Continuation Agreements (CMCAs), first negotiated in 2002.
Parties to the revised package of benefits are Ok Tedi Mining Limited, the Papua New Guinea Sustainable Development Program Limited and the National Government as well as the communities representing almost 160 villages from the mine to the delta at the mouth of the Fly River.
“Some villages have yet to sign but we are seeing overwhelming support for the package” Keith Faulkner, Managing Director of OTML said at the signing ceremony.
A second ceremony was held in Buka on Saturday, June 30, where the Minister for Mining, Honourable Sam Akoitai signed on behalf of the PNG Government.
The complete package consists of three parts:
OTML and PNGSDP will also support the communities in setting up a new development foundation to implement the sustainable development projects negotiated under the Memorandum of Agreement for the CMCA review.
But Mr Faulkner said, the real challenge still lay ahead.
“We have to spend this money wisely, and the new foundation needs the combined efforts of the nine CMCA regions, OTML, the PNGSDP and the provincial and national governments to ensure this opportunity is realised,” he said.
“This process was delicately poised. It took all of its component parts, the parties and delegates at the negotiating table, the independent team supporting it, and the villagers who depended on the outcome of the review – to participate openly and with transparency and mutual trust to reach the good outcome we celebrate today.”
Mr Alan Breen, who will take over from Mr Faulkner as Managing Director this week congratulated the many people who contributed to the success of the review process.
“It is clear how powerful openness, transparency and respect can be when all parties seek a win-win outcome” Mr Breen said.
Ok Tedi mine produces an average of 200,000 tonnes of copper concentrate and 16 tonnes of gold per year. It also contributes about 10 per cent towards PNG’s Gross Domestic Product and accounts for about 25 per cent of its export revenue.

Melinda Gebob, an electronics mechanic, is OTML’s Apprentice-of-the-Year.
The 24-year-old Morobe lass won the award ahead of four other finalists who were all
male. The runner-up is Paul Momo, an electrical fitter.
In announcing this year’s winner, OTML MD Keith Faulkner, described the
company’s training program as the next best thing the mine has to offer to PNG.
“This year Ok Tedi will contribute K1 billion to the State’s coffers in taxes, a
contribution that is greater than any other company in this country.
In spite of all that, the very best thing we can do for this country is train people
because, as we all know, the money drains away and the benefits sometimes don’t
show.
“Training is better than contributing money to the national coffers because we can
see the benefits on the ground – right here, right now,” Mr Faulkner said.
Both Ms Gebob and Mr Momo will represent OTML in the contest for the National
Apprentice-of-the-Year Award in Port Moresby on the 30th of November. This is the
first time OTML is entering the contest with two candidates.
Ms Gebob is thankful for the opportunity to present OTML while Momo reminds his
fellow apprentices that the sky is the limit to their ambitions.
Since the introduction of the National Apprentice-of the-Year Award several years
ago, OTML has won five times. The last time was in 2004 when OTML’s first and
only woman welder, Serah Tito won the award ahead of nine other contestants, all
male, to snatch both the major award and the Lord Casey trophy for scoring the
highest points in theory work.
Also for the first time this year, OTML has entered a contestant for the National Trade
Testing Candidate-of-the-Year Award. He is Frank Soma, from Nomad, Western
Province..
