Safety
The unique environment and climate in which the company operates, and the tasks carried out in the day-to-day operations of a large open-cut mine and mill, require OTML and its employees to be particularly vigilant about safety.
OTML's approach to safety is underpinned by its motto "Sefti Em I Nambawan" (Safety Is The Priority). 
This message governs all aspects of work and life within the regions that it operates. Zero Harm is the company's safety goal. OTML's safety record is among the best of mining operations worldwide.
OTML's safety culture is reinforced by a system of external and internal safety audits conducted by the National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) and OTML staff who have completed NOSA auditor's training. OTML is presently rated by NOSA as a Four Star operation.
On arrival at Ok Tedi, all visitors and employees must undertake a general safety induction. All employees must also complete hazard identification training and regular safety training specific to their job description and work site.
Ongoing training is provided to employees in every department in a number of other safety disciplines, such as:
- hazard control and identification
- job safety analysis/safe work instruction
- job safety observation skills
- risk management assessment and action planning, and
- Incident Causation Analysis Methodology (ICAM).
OTML also trains all employees in the "Take 5 for Safety" program, which requires workers to use five key steps - "Stop", "Think", "Identify", "Plan" and "Proceed" - in every aspect of their work.
In 2004, OTML began comprehensive health monitoring for all employees, with special emphasis on people with particular exposures such as laboratory workers and specialist welders.
In addition to its comprehensive workplace safety program, OTML conducts a company-wide road safety awareness program. This has been extended to the local communities in which OTML operates.
