A team from Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) recently planted 1, 500 trees as part of this year’s World Environment Day (WED).
OTML’s Rehabilitation team, with the support of two contractor companies, LOTIC Bige Limited and Dredeco PNG, commemorated WED when they planted the trees on three hectares of land at Ok Tedi’s Bige dredging site.
OTML Bige Operations Superintendent for Technical Services, Mr Iga Au commended the team for their great effort, saying such an initiative was the first of its kind.
“Since the Bige Operations began in 1997, we have rehabilitated 131 hectares of land by planting 161, 242 different species of trees,” said Mr Au.
“Our Rehabilitation team have done an excellent job over the years and to see everyone take time off from their busy schedules to help mark this important day by planting 1,500 trees is a significant milestone in itself.”
The Bige Dredging Operations is located 100km downstream from the mine. It was established in 1997 to dredge 10 million cubic metres of sediments annually from the Ok Tedi River and place on engineered stockpiles on the east and west banks of the river.
