Social Sustainability

Stakeholder engagement

There are 158 villages in the Western Province where community life has been directly influenced by the presence of the mine.

Our social license to operate is based directly on the Free, Prior and Informed Consent provided by these communities.

Through our many years of successful operation, we have developed a detailed Community Relations Engagement Program that includes comprehensive two-way communication with all affected stakeholders.

For more information on our Community Relations, see Social Licence

Community Health & Wellness

Providing access to quality medical services for our workforce, business partners, and surrounding communities is essential to Ok Tedi’s long-term sustainability.

The OK Tedi owned and operated Tabubil Hospital is an accredited five-star facility under the PNG Department of Health providing a range of services to mine employees and the North Fly District and Telefomin District communities including

  • accident and emergency
  • general medicine
  • obstetrics and gynaecology
  • operating theatre
  • maternal and child health clinics
  • family planning
  • and various other laboratory testing and diagnosis services

The hospital is the Western Province referral hospital, servicing across the North, Middle, Delta and South Fly districts, and also provides support for several local aid posts, working closely with stakeholders including the Health Department, various NGO’s and other private health providers to deliver comprehensive health services across the Western Provinces.

We also undertake regular health patrols and radio health consultations, providing consultations and primary medical care such as vaccinations, and run a community health education program to deliver resources on issues such as tuberculosis and sexual health.

Employee Safety, Health & Wellness

Safety is a core value for Ok Tedi: our safety policies and procedures are based on the belief that all accidents are preventable and that an incident and injury-free workplace is an achievable goal.

Ok Tedi has a comprehensive Safety and Occupational Health management system and each major operational area has safety champions embedded to ensure safety is prioritised in everything we do.

We apply a behaviour-based safety program (iLEAD) which supports communication of safety expectations, monitoring of behaviour and use of safety tools/activities including inspections, hazard identification and job safety observations.

As a 24/7 operating mine, we prioritize ‘fitness for work’, with special attention given to fatigue prevention and monitoring programs.

All employees complete comprehensive health assessments and lifestyle disease screening, and personal health improvement plans are developed and support provided to achieve health goals.

Our on-site gym and recreational facilities provide team members with accessible opportunities to stay active, supporting their physical wellbeing and overall health.

Ok Tedi has a zero tolerance illicit drug and alcohol policy and employees, and contractors are subject to random tests and for cause testing where justified.

Our dedicated Organisational Wellbeing & Culture team promotes mental health, positive work culture and overall employee wellbeing

The Tabubil hospital includes a specialised mental health clinic to ensure mental health support is also available, and an Employee Assistance Program is in place to provide confidential counselling and support to employees and their families.

Our People are our Greatest Assets

Security

Security is managed by our Asset Protection team, supported by contracted (unarmed) security guards and the Royal PNG Constabulary.

Interactions with the constabulary are coordinated through our Asset Protection team to ensure alignment with Ok Tedi’s commitment to the United Nations’ Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.

As a company owned and controlled township with a strong social licence to operate, the security risk to people and property at Tabubil is very low.

Restrictions are enforced on the sale of alcohol within the township, and employees and contractors are subject to random testing for alcohol and drugs.

We promote a proactive approach to security based on sound community relations and respectful  behaviour standards to ensure a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all.

Modern security and surveillance systems are used for surveillance and access control by our security and policing teams, with security checkpoints and screening required to enter operational areas.

Community Education

Education is widely accepted by the Western Province communities as a pathway to obtaining quality employment and improved long-term economic and social conditions.

Ok Tedi contributes to new school infrastructure across the Province through the Tax Credit Scheme and makes significant investments into education scholarships for mine community students to undertake secondary, post-secondary and tertiary courses in Papua New Guinea and abroad.

Our non-profit subsidiary Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF) leads our community education efforts as part of our wider community development initiatives.

OTDF also manages several distance education centres throughout the Western Province, providing access to secondary studies to hundreds of out of school youth and adults and helping them to meet tertiary enrolment requirements.

The OTDF works with various partners including the Provincial Education Department to help drive the Government’s 2050 Vision to improve access and provide universal education for all school aged children.

Training & Upskilling

Ok Tedi operates the Tabubil-based Star Mountains Training Institute (SMTI), a Registered Training Organisation offering Preferred Area Development (PAD) programs, Apprenticeships and a Graduate Development Scheme.

OK Tedi’s PAD programs enhances the career prospects of indivduals from mine-impacted communities by providing specialised skills training, such as mine truck operation, bus driving, mill operations, or security and rescue .

Ok Tedi also operates a four-year apprenticeship training program covering over 10 trade areas, from refrigeration and air conditioning, to carpentry and construction, to plumbing or electronics.

Our Graduate Development Scheme identifies promising new university graduates and offers them positions in their respective fields, where they will undergo a two-year training program, including additional mentoring and valuable on-the-job training.

While all our training programs are designed to develop skills that benefit Ok Tedi’s operations, the skills are transferrable to many industries and many participants have gone on to grow their careers in other companies in-country and abroad.
