Ok Tedi Mining

Ok Tedi’s Mount Fubilan mine is located in the Star Mountains region of Papua New Guinea’s Western Province, approximately 16km east of the Indonesian border.

Mt Fubilan is an open-cut copper, gold and silver mine that has been in operation since 1984 .

The mine and mill operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year despite often harsh and rainy weather conditions.

Over 60 thousand tonnes of ore is mined each day and delivered to the mill for processing.

Ore is processed at an onsite flotation processing plant capable of treating up to 24 million tonnes per annum.

The Mount Fubilan operations supply chain also includes:

  • A 156km pipeline to transport concentrate from the processing plant on Mt Fubilan to the port of Kiunga
  • Concentrate stockpile and barge loading facilities at Kiunga
  • A Tailings Pyrite Plant (TPP) to separate iron sulphides (pyrites) from tailings and a 125km pipeline to transport pyrite concentrate to designated stockpiles at Bige
  • A dredging operation at Bige to remove tailings sediments from the Ok Tedi River and store in engineered stockpiles
  • Hydro-electric power plants at Ok Menga and Yuk Creek which supply on average 75% of power for our operations, and thermal power generation facilities to supplement

Mine Life to 2050

Our Growth 2050 Strategy

Development and Exploration

Exploration and mineral resource development is an integral part of our future.

Our exploration strategy includes mapping in and around of our existing Mt. Fubilan pit, exploration of near mine locations (within 5-10 km of the mine site).

The current exploration program includes several exploration licences covering approximately 680 square kilometres.

Ok Tedi also holds several brownfields strategic exploration leases in the Western Province.

Operations Support

Due to the geographically remote location of the Ok Tedi Mine, the township of Tabubil was built to support the operations.

Tabubil includes all the infrastructure to support the mine and all the comforts for our team to make a home, including an airport, workshops, warehouses, housing, banks, schools, medical facilities, gyms, social club, restaurants and grocery stores.

Most of the accommodation is in the form of detached high-set housing, as well as camp facilities for Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) workers.

As Ok Tedi looks to an extended mine life, we are investing in upgrades to camp accommodation and other support infrastructure.

Concentrate Sales

Ok Tedi’s copper-gold-silver concentrate product is sold to smelters or refineries in Asia and Europe.

The majority of our concentrate is sold under term contracts to highly valued long-standing customers.

Sales to the spot market are limited.
