Ok Tedi provides hands-on training opportunity for local nursing school

Ok Tedi Mining Limited is working closely with the Rumginae School of Nursing to enhance students clinical training.

A memorandum of agreement was signed between Ok Tedi and the Rumginae School of nursing in April to effect this collaboration.

The agreement will enable students to do practical training at the Tabubil hospital to gain more hands-on clinical experience.

“Ok Tedi is a responsible miner with a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and social responsibility. Our support for the Rumginae School of Nursing reflects our ongoing efforts to create lasting positive change in the areas we operate,” said Mr Raymond Singamis, Manager Health Services for Ok Tedi.

“Tabubil hospital is a level 5 facility, and services the Ok Tedi workforce and patients from the surrounding communities. Thus students doing their training will enhance their capacity building and theories learned in the classroom,” said Mr Singamis.

He also highlighted the current upgrade of the hospital, including specialist services.

“We have specialists in surgery, obstetric, general clinic services, pediatrics, internal medicine and would also provide other services once facility is upgraded,” Mr Singamis said.

He acknowledged other development partners such as the Catholic Health Services, Evangelical Church of PNG Health Services, Kiunga District Hospital and others for developing Rumginae Nursing School to ensure improved health delivery services in Western Province and PNG.

Ok Tedi representatives attended the school’s recent graduation ceremony in April and heard of the dire need for student trainee placements for their practical training thus aptly provided this arrangement to assist the school.

Mr Singamis said collective efforts from the district, provincial government and other development partners are essential in developing this nursing school.

“Working in partnership achieves greater results for all ensuring more health workers are produced at Rumginae and are well trained for effective health services delivery. This is aligned with the company’s growth 2050 vision.”
