Ok Tedi Mining Limited (Ok Tedi) has been recognised for its critical role in supporting the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) to achieve international accreditation for its engineering programs – an effort that began nearly a decade ago in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers PNG (IEPNG).
Ok Tedi stepped in as a key contributor when PNGUoT and IEPNG initiated the accreditation journey, providing financial assistance for the upgrade of laboratory equipment and technical guidance provided through the Industry Advisory Board, which was chaired by ExxonMobil and later by Kumul Petroleum and supported by other major players such as Newcrest (Now Newmont).
Ok Tedi Managing Director and CEO Kedi Ilimbit was an active member of the board and helped steer the university’s efforts toward meeting international standards.
Ok Tedi played a vital role through both financial support, donating funds for laboratory equipment upgrades, and advisory input. Mr Ilimbit was on the board, offering guidance throughout the process.
As part of the accreditation process, PNGUoT restructured its engineering curriculum to meet global benchmarks set out in the Washington Accords. Ok Tedi professionals participated in Departmental Advisory Committees to review course content, while others like Ok Tedi Manager of Business Improvement Gilbert Hamambi delivered guest lectures to provide practical insights and mentorship to students.
One of Ok Tedi’s most valued contributions continues through the Professional Work Experience (PWE) program, a mandatory requirement for engineering students to complete 450 hours of industrial training before graduation.
Ok Tedi’s General Manager Strategy Business Development and Optimisation Allan Bong, while speaking during the event said, “We are proud to have supported Unitech on its journey to achieving this important milestone.”
“As a proud Papua New Guinean company, we recognise the importance of investing in our future engineers and ensuring they are equipped with the skills, exposure and experience needed to lead our country’s development.”
Ok Tedi consistently recruit the highest numbers of trainees compared to other organisations, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to engineering education and capacity-building in PNG.
This important achievement for PNGUoT also highlights Ok Tedi’s dedication to strengthening its education programs and creating opportunities for young Papua New Guineans to thrive in the technical and industrial sectors, through engineering.
