Ok Tedi Mining Limited (Ok Tedi) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing education in healthcare in Papua New Guinea with a donation of over K400,000 to the University of Papua New Guinea’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
The funds will be used to purchase state-of-the-art High Definition (HD) Virtual Anatomy Tables, advancing human anatomy learning tools that will train future generations of PNG doctors.
Ok Tedi Manager Government and External Relations, Martin Paining Junior, said the donation of K419,939.77 reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to national development through strategic investments in education and health.
“We believe in building a stronger PNG and this is done by investing in our people,” said Mr. Paining. “By supporting our future doctors, we are helping improve healthcare for every Papua New Guinean, including the 98 per cent of Ok Tedi’s workforce.”
Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor Nakapi Tefuarani said that the donation was a step forward for medical education in the country, noting that it will have a lasting impact on the quality of medical training in PNG and the Pacific.
“The HD Virtual Anatomy tables are high-tech, interactive platforms that will allow students to explore the human body in 3 dimensions, offering a dynamic and immersive alternative to traditional cadaver-based learning,” said Professor Nakapi.
He said the purchase of these tables will also help the school progress towards digital surgery, a goal they are actively pursuing.
The HD Virtual Anatomy tables are expected to be installed in 2026, benefiting hundreds of students in years to come.
Ok Tedi remains committed to community investment strategies that focus on education, health, infrastructure, and sustainable development in Western Province and Papua New Guinea.
The donation was presented on October 13th.
