Ok Tedi signs pilot road construction project for Tabubil/Olsobip Junction and Golgubip Station

More than 10,000 people in two remote areas of Western province will now have easier access to basic government services – thanks to Ok Tedi Mining Limited (Ok Tedi).

Ok Tedi recently signed a contract agreement  last month for the construction of a Pilot Track between the Tabubil/Olsobip Junction and Golgubip Station.

This is a vital link connecting remote communities in Western Province to the main Tabubil-Telefomin-Olsobip road network.

Access to these remote areas are currently via a bush track or by air. The construction of the road will provide more opportunities for these communities.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ok Tedi Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kedi Ilimbit said: “The road will serve the communities of Golgubip, Duwinim, and Imigabip, providing vehicle access for the first time. This development is expected to improve access to urban centres, enhance the delivery of government services, and support economic and social growth in the region.

“The project aims to address long-standing challenges caused by the lack of road access and connectivity and is seen as a major step forward in improving the livelihood of people in these remote areas.”

Funding for the project is provided under the Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme, with Ok Tedi Mining Limited contributing K27 million (K27,223,149.92) and the Department of Works and Highways providing K10 million (K9,755,262.55). The total project cost is K37 million (K36,978,412.47).

The project measures 8.24 kilometres in length and is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Kayop Investment Limited has been awarded the contract to carry out the construction.

Since 1997 Ok Tedi has spent PGK1.61 billion on development projects in Western province and Telefomin District (West Sepik Province) in various sectors such as health, education, law and justice, and transportation.

Ok Tedi’s support to projects in Western Province and Telefomin District is delivered through its Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme program, Ok Tedi Development Foundation and in partnership with various development partners.

Ok Tedi is a 100 percent PNG owned entity and is committed to supporting and contributing to nation-building especially in Western Province and the rest of PNG.
