Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) donated K500,000 to the Metago Working Group (MWG) on
February 5th in Port Moresby to support MWG’s efforts in the second phase of upgrading the
Metago College into a fully-fledged university.
This brings OTML’s financial support to MWG to K1 million after initially donating K500,000
to MWG in 2022 to develop the Master Plan for the first phase of upgrading Metago College.
The second phase upgrade includes the construction of student residences, staff housing, a
library, classrooms, an e-Learning and ICT centre, a sewage treatment plant, a solar farm,
and fencing.
The new college will become a foundational campus for the University of United Church,
alongside Rarongo Theological College and Gaulim Teachers College.
Director Corporate Affairs Noman Temu stated that the donation reflects OTML’s recognition
of human resources as a crucial driver for PNG’s development, which is supported by
donations to tertiary institutions.
“Education is a key pillar of sustainable development and a core value at OTML. We believe
that investing in education is investing in the future of our country,” Mr Temu stated.
MWG Chairman Sir Moi Avei expressed gratitude to OTML for its contributions. “OTML’s
support will be recognized when we name the first building the Ok Tedi Building,” he added.
OTML Manager Economic Programs Steve Hoap emphasized that as a 100% Papua New
Guinea-owned mine, OTML is dedicated to empowering tertiary institutions and communities
across the nation. “Our commitment to PNG’s future is evident in our contributions and
financial support to tertiary institutions including the University of PNG and PNG University of
Technology,” Mr Hoap stated.
