Students at Ningerum High School in North Fly district can now enjoy better sleeping conditions – thanks to Ok Tedi Mining Limited (Ok Tedi) through its Infrastructure Support Services Department.
The company recently completed a major refurbishment of three deteriorating dormitories and ablution blocks, reaffirming its strong commitment to education and community development in the Western Province.
The K759,613.03 project was formally handed back to the school on 30th April 2026.
Ningerum High School accommodates more than 700 students, many of whom are from remote surrounding communities. The upgraded facilities will allow the school to resume boarding, a critical development expected to significantly improve student attendance, retention and learning outcomes. The project included:
- Maintenance and upgrade of two girls’ dormitories, each accommodating 90 students
- Maintenance and upgrade of two girls’ ablution blocks
- Installation of new septic systems and safe drinking water tanks
- Maintenance and upgrade of one boys’ dormitory with 40-bed capacity
- Supply and installation of new bunk beds and cupboards in all dormitory cubicles
Speaking at the handover, Manager Infrastructure Support Services, Mr Akolo Kotange, said the project focused on student wellbeing and long-term educational outcomes.
“Ok Tedi recognises that Quality education begins with safe and liveable facilities. This refurbishment restores essential boarding infrastructure that directly supports student welfare and learning outcomes,” Mr Kotange said.
“Our team is proud to deliver facilities that will serve Ningerum High School students for many years to come.”
Mr Kotange also acknowledged ongoing water challenges at the school and confirmed additional support.
“To address water supply challenges, Ok Tedi supported the installation of water tanks and a water pump to ensure a reliable water supply to the girls’ ablution blocks. We are also progressing the Ningerum Station Water Supply Project, which will support the school, other Government institutions, business houses and surrounding communities,” he said.
Ningerum High School Headmaster, Pomame Sibert, welcomed the upgrades, describing them as transformational.
“Our dormitories were in poor condition, and boarding had become unsustainable. These upgrades allow us to safely resume boarding and provide students with a proper living environment,” Mr Sibert said.
“On behalf of our students, parents, and staff, I thank Ok Tedi for this vital support, which will have a lasting impact on education in Ningerum”
The project ensures students now have access to improved accommodation, modern sanitation, and reliable drinking water which are essential foundations for a safe, healthy, and productive learning environment.
Ok Tedi continues to invest in sustainable community infrastructure across its host communities, with education remaining a key pillar of its social development commitments. In addition to boarding upgrades, the company is currently funding a new laboratory at Ningerum High School.
